Allemansrätten — the right of public access
Sweden's allemansrätten lets you paddle, land and camp for a night almost anywhere in nature — but it is built on consideration: do not destroy, do not disturb.
- Camp at most one night in the same spot, out of sight of houses.
- Make fires only in safe spots and never during a fire ban — ask us about the current status before you leave.
- Never light a fire directly on bare rock — it cracks the slab forever.
- Carry all rubbish out. All of it.
- Keep dogs leashed 1 March – 20 August, when wildlife has young.
- Fishing is not part of allemansrätten — buy a fishing permit at the reception.
The nature conservation card (DANO)
The maintained campsites around Stora Le — fire ring, firewood, dry toilet — are financed by the nature conservation card. If you use the sites you need the card; it costs little and keeps the whole system running. Sold at our reception.
Packing list for an overnight tour
- Storage barrel (rent from us) — everything important stays dry
- Tent, sleeping bag and pad
- Cook set and stove (rent from us), matches packed waterproof
- Water bottle — many paddlers boil lake water
- Warm spares: wool next to the skin, never only cotton
- Rain gear, sun protection, a warm hat — often all in one day
- Mosquito repellent (June–July), first aid kit, headlamp
- Map in a plastic sleeve — phone in the barrel
Safety on the lake
Stora Le is friendly but big: wind builds waves fast, and the water stays cold well into June. The rules we paddle by ourselves:
- Life vest on — always, everyone. Included with every rental.
- Stay near shore in wind; never cross open water in a crosswind with a loaded canoe.
- Plan your distance for the morning — afternoon wind is strongest.
- Tell us your route and when you plan to be back.
- Check our weather forecast at the jetty before setting off.
Good to know
- Supermarkets and a pharmacy are in Ed, one kilometre from the camp — shop after you arrive.
- Mobile coverage is good on the southern lake, patchier north — download offline maps.
- Drinking water is available at the reception; fill up before departure.
- Coming by train? Ed station is a five-minute walk, direct trains Gothenburg–Oslo.
